In fantastic news for grassroots football in Mumbai, the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) and, the city’s only I-League club, Mumbai FC, have come together to launch the Masters League to give children across the country’s commercial capital an opportunity to showcase their talent. To be played on weekends from January 16, 2016 in a league + knockout format, the league is open to boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 14 years.
One of the highlights of this tournament is that it will be played in a 5-a-side format on artificial turfs. This will allow kids to get maximum touches of the ball during games, put them in more 1 v 1 situations, give them competitive match experience and put them in situations where quick decision making is necessary – all of which are excellent for their development as footballers. Teams will compete across four age groups – 6 to 8, 8 to 10, 10 to 12 and 12 to 14 years (age as of December 31, 2015). Boys and girls will play together in the first three age groups, but will play separate leagues for the 12-14 years age group. Further, outstanding talents will be scouted by Mumbai FC and brought into the club’s grassroots system so that they get access to one year of top quality coaching at no cost whatsoever.
The Masters League will be played across 3 venues in Mumbai, in Andheri, Parel and Powai, to give children from various neighbourhoods the chance to play football. The best part is that the league is open to all academies, clubs, schools and independent groups at a minimal fee of Rs 300 per team. Importantly, the league’s rock-bottom entry cost will bring children from diverse social and economic backgrounds together.
With 300 teams set to play more than 600 hours of football during the tournament, the MDFA and Mumbai FC have ensured that 2016 will begin with lots of football and fun for kids in Mumbai!
Registration is open only to the first 100 teams at each location.
