In a welcome move for children in the city, Bengaluru FC, among the better run clubs in Indian football, have announced the launch of their grassroots football competition for schools in conjunction with tournaments for college students and corporates. During a press conference held at the Bangalore Football Stadium yesterday, the club laid out ambitious plans to make their school competition the most sought after tournament in the city and the region.

While there are football tournaments being conducted in Bangalore, a tournament conducted by an I-League club will give youngsters across the city an opportunity to impress Bengaluru FC coaches from their Academy who will in turn be able to offer the best talents suitable development pathways. Speaking about the initiative, BFC COO, Mustafa Ghouse, said:

“This is something that we’ve been working on for a while and we’re very keen on executing it. We’ve always wanted to launch a series of tournaments for the football community in Bangalore. To give children the opportunity to play in high-level tournaments is the main focus.”

Over 20 schools from across Bangalore will participate in the league-cum-knockout tournament that has been conceptualised keeping in mind age-specific formats; Under-10s will play 7 v 7 games lasting 30 minutes, Under-12s will play 9 v 9 games lasting 40 minutes, and Under-14s will play 11 v 11 games lasting 50 minutes.

BFC CTO, Mandar Tamhane, who was also present, touched on the importance of giving young players the right exposure through well-managed competitions and said:

“We feel that we need to create this competition at the lower age groups. From Bengaluru FC’s point of view, we will have all the talent from the lower age groups available. Our youth coaches will be on the lookout for talent that can be part of the club’s academy.”

The school tournament, called the BFC Inter-School Soccer Shield and supported by Enerzal, the club’s official sports drink partner, will be held from 7 to 16 October, 2015 at the Bangalore Football Stadium. Friends, family  and well-wishers will be able to stay up to date with tournament scores through mobile app, Soccer Trac.

About time Bengaluru kids had a proper kickabout!
